During the first year of operation our farm has purchased seed from Oregon Oyster Farms, Inc. in Newport, Oregon and Odyssey Shellfish, in Bowser, British Columbia, Canada. We have been very lucky to find two seed providers who have had high quality seed available and an eagerness to accommodate our unique venture.

   
Oregon Oyster Farms, Inc has a seed operation (pictured above) located south of the US 101 bridge in Newport Oregon. They purchase larva and set it themselves in their nursery. Here they raise Triploids as well as Diploid Pacific Oysters. In the raceways, originally built by Weyerhaeuser for salmon they have adapted an upweller system and outdoor algae production to feed and raise seed to sizes suitable for farms such as ours. They also have a more traditional farm (pictured below) 7 miles up the Yaquina Estuary where they raise oysters for meat production as well as singles in a Lantern Net system hung from large rafts.
The oysters raised by Oregon Oyster Farms can be purchased through their two retail outlets in Newport, Oregon or enjoyed at any of the Mo's Restaurants located on the Central Oregon Coast.
   
   

Odyssey Shellfish Ltd. does not set their own larvae on shell. They purchase Diploid Pacific Oysters in very small sizes already set from Kuiper Mariculture in California. This small seed is then raised to 3/4 inch for our planting in oyster bags. Odyssey Shellfish uses a flupsy system to hold and grow their seed. These flupsys produce a very uniform shape by constantly breaking back the new growth at the edges of the shell.
